Why Your Home Network Matters
Many WiFi problems have nothing to do with the speed you are buying from your internet provider.
You can have gigabit internet coming into the house and still have weak WiFi upstairs, dropped connections outside, unreliable cameras, or streaming issues.

When Eero Is a Good Choice
Eero is a strong option for homeowners who want reliable WiFi without spending much time managing the network.
Its biggest advantage is simplicity.
The Eero app handles much of the network configuration automatically, making it easy to install additional units, manage connected devices, create guest access, and monitor the network.
Eero is not limited to wireless mesh. Current Eero systems support wired Ethernet backhaul, and Eero offers dedicated PoE access points for professionally wired installations.
There is also an outdoor Eero access point for extending WiFi to patios, yards, pools, and other exterior areas.
Eero can be a good fit when:
- You want a simple network that is easy to manage
- Your home has relatively straightforward WiFi requirements
- You do not need extensive network segmentation or custom configuration
- You primarily use the network for streaming, work, phones, tablets, and everyday smart devices
- You want the system to make many network decisions automatically
For many homes, that is more than enough.
When Ubiquiti Is the Better Fit
We usually recommend Ubiquiti UniFi when the network needs to be part of a larger home technology system.
UniFi allows us to design and manage the router, switches, wired devices, WiFi access points, cameras, network security, and remote monitoring from one platform.
More importantly, it gives us much more control over how the network operates.
For example, we can create separate networks for:
- Homeowners
- Guests
- Smart home equipment
- Security cameras
- IoT devices
- AV equipment
- Home offices
Those networks can be isolated or allowed to communicate with one another based on the needs of the home.
We can also manage firewall rules, WiFi settings, traffic policies, wired switch ports, access points, cameras, and other network components.
That level of control becomes especially useful as a home gets larger or more technologically complex.
Eero vs. Ubiquiti for Large Homes
Large homes create WiFi challenges that a single router cannot solve.
Basements, upper floors, garages, additions, patios, pool areas, guest houses, and outdoor kitchens may all need coverage.
Building materials matter too. Stone, concrete, masonry, metal, low-E glass, and other materials can reduce wireless signal strength.
Both Eero and Ubiquiti can use multiple access points and wired Ethernet backhaul to improve coverage.
The difference is that UniFi gives us more tools to design, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot a large network as one complete system.
In a custom home, we can plan access point locations before construction is finished, connect them with Ethernet, provide dedicated PoE switching, and adjust individual access points based on how the home performs after installation.
For larger properties where consistent WiFi is expected everywhere, that additional control is one reason we usually prefer UniFi.
Eero vs. Ubiquiti for Smart Homes
The more systems you connect to a network, the more important network design becomes.
Consider a home with:
- Control4 automation
- Lutron lighting
- Motorized shades
- Security cameras
- Door stations
- Smart TVs
- Streaming devices
- Whole-home audio
- Outdoor audio
- Touchscreens
- Home office equipment
- Phones, tablets, and computers
Many of these systems communicate across the local network even when they are not accessing the internet.
That means a problem with network configuration can sometimes look like a problem with the smart home system itself.
A touchscreen may respond slowly. A streaming device may disappear. AirPlay may not find a speaker. A camera may take too long to load.
For smaller smart homes, Eero can work well.
For larger Control4 and Lutron projects, we generally prefer Ubiquiti because we can manage the full network and create the configuration the home’s technology requires.
Eero vs. Ubiquiti for Security Cameras
If you are using a few standalone wireless cameras, either network can provide the WiFi they need.
A professionally installed camera system is different.
Larger homes may have cameras covering entrances, driveways, garages, gates, side yards, patios, pools, and other exterior areas.
We generally prefer wired PoE cameras in these situations because a single Ethernet cable can provide both network connectivity and power.
Ubiquiti also offers UniFi Protect, its security camera platform.
This allows the camera system and network infrastructure to work within the same UniFi ecosystem, with local video recording and remote access.
For homeowners already using UniFi for their network, this can simplify the overall system.
Eero vs. Ubiquiti for Outdoor WiFi
Indoor WiFi does not always travel well outdoors.
Exterior walls, masonry, low-E glass, distance, landscaping, and the shape of the property can all affect signal strength.
Both Eero and Ubiquiti now offer outdoor WiFi hardware.
For a simple patio or backyard, an Eero outdoor access point may provide everything the homeowner needs.
On larger properties, UniFi gives us more options for integrating several outdoor access points with the rest of the network and managing them as part of the same system.
Outdoor WiFi can be useful for:

- Sports courts
- Detached garages
- Guest houses

- Outdoor audio

The right solution depends more on the property and network design than on the logo on the access point.
Eero vs. Ubiquiti for New Construction
If you are building or renovating a home, this is the best time to design the network correctly.
Running Ethernet while the walls are open costs much less than trying to add wiring later.
We typically plan wiring for:

- Detached structures
- Future technology
Both Eero and UniFi can take advantage of wired Ethernet.
For larger custom homes, however, we generally recommend UniFi because the network can be designed as part of the home’s complete technology infrastructure rather than as a standalone WiFi system.
Is Ubiquiti Faster Than Eero?
Not necessarily.
WiFi performance depends on much more than the brand.
The WiFi generation, access point model, Ethernet connection speed, internet connection, device capabilities, placement, interference, channel configuration, and number of connected devices can all affect performance.
A poorly designed Ubiquiti network can perform worse than a properly designed Eero system.
Likewise, replacing Eero with UniFi will not fix bad access point locations or insufficient wiring.
Good network design matters more than the logo on the equipment.
Is Eero Bad for a Smart Home?
No.
Eero can work very well in a smart home, especially when the home does not require complicated network configuration.
The reason we often recommend Ubiquiti for larger smart homes is not because Eero is unreliable.
It is because UniFi gives us more control.
As the number of connected systems increases, that control makes it easier to segment devices, troubleshoot problems, manage wired and wireless equipment, and make changes as the home evolves.
Should You Choose Eero or Ubiquiti?
For many homeowners, the decision is fairly simple.
Choose Eero if you want easy-to-manage WiFi and do not need extensive network customization.
Consider Ubiquiti UniFi if you have a large property, custom home, Control4 system, Lutron system, security cameras, whole-home AV, extensive outdoor WiFi, or many connected devices.
The equipment is only part of the equation.
Access point placement, cabling, switching, configuration, construction materials, outdoor coverage, and the systems connected to the network all affect the final result.
